Dr. Chris Barker - Specialist Orthodontist in Alwoodley, Leeds
I qualified in Dentistry from the University of Leeds in 2003. Following vocational dental training in the Yorkshire region, I was employed in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, gaining experience of head & neck trauma, oral surgery and its interaction with orthodontics. I then worked in general dental practice in Leeds alongside a part-time position in community paediatric dentistry before leaving the country to embark on a trip around the world, where I raised money to enable me to provide dental care in remote communities in the Peruvian Andes. On my return to the UK, I took a post teaching undergraduate dental students restorative dentistry and oral surgery at Leeds Dental Institute. Following this I worked as a Trust grade dentist in paediatric dentistry at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, Sheffield and as a general dental practitioner for Eclipse Dental care.
I completed my three-year specialist orthodontic training in Bristol Dental Hospital and the Royal United Hospital, Bath, gaining Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2011 and completing a Degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. I completed my further
advanced training at Leeds Dental Institute and York Hospital, providing complex orthodontic treatment involving the surgical, paediatric and
restorative teams and continuing my research. I am a Consultant in Orthodontics at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Leeds Dental Institute. My main area of interest is in treating severe orthodontic problems including patients with missing teeth, impacted teeth and those requiring jaw surgery.
I am currently providing specialist orthodontic treatment for children and adults at Nursery Lane Dental with a range of aesthetic appliances.
I am actively involved in my profession, being an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Training Programme Director for Dental Core trainees at Pinderfields Hospital. I am a reviewer for several dental/orthodontic journals and I am the past treasurer and Chair of the Training Grades Group of the British Orthodontic Society and currently the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination representative.
